The American public has always perceived Volvos as being safer than Saabs, though they're not, and Saabs as more expensive, though they're not. The thing to remember is that sales figure in the US say nothing about actual quality of a product. We tend to go by the "bandwagon" approach, as in "get on the bandwagon". Ford and Honda a few years ago argued about whether the Taurus or Accord were the top sellers, and Ford finally sold a whole bunch of Tauruses to rental car agencies to boost their figures and claim the top spot. They do this because they know that being able to claim to be the top seller will result in even more sales. Saab owners, on the other hand, tend to be different from the mainstream, which in the US is a good thing.
