There are so many threads I have not read yet, but that housewife reputation refers far more to Volvo (though the 9-5 wagon may be changing that). I know some info that was gathered by Emory University's business school for SaabUSA:

-The school found it was more difficult to categorize Saab drivers than drivers of any other make. This confirmed the notion that Saab drivers were individualists and prompted saabusa to develop the "Find Your Own Road" campaign. The campaign backfired slightly -- individualists don't like to think they conform to anything, including the traits of non-conformity!

Two things Saab did figure out: as a group Saab owners have more post-graduate degrees per capita than other drivers and they like dogs a lot.

My obsevations in the Washington, DC, Charlottesville (Virginia) and Atlanta markets are:
-Saab drivers are very good drivers and tend to drive like Europeans. They assume that the directional indicator serves a logical purpose and that the left lane is for fast driving. They drive fast, but respect other drivers and tend to be courteous.

-Saab owners appreciate the car's practicality and safety-- we were folding down the rear seat years before other cars gave you the option. Many of us brag about the car's safety and, like myself, have exited severe accidents unharmed because of the car's design.

- Saab owners don't like SUVs much. I am personally dismayed Saab is entering the market.

-Charlottesville has a high proportion of Saabs and you can often walk to the wrong car in the parking lot if not careful. Subaru is also widely popular there -- nearby mountains and fun roads may be the cause.

- Despite the saabusa headquarters in Atlanta, Atlantans have maintained their dopey love of SUVs. This is in spite of the fact that the city has the highest average commute in the country (36 miles/day). Why spend that in a gas-guzzling machine? Demographically, Atlanta has a big share of rich housewives but Saab's market penetration in Atlanta is noticeably lower than in other metro areas. The largest Volvo dealership in the U.S. (Dyer & Dyer) is there. BMW and Lexus round out the majority of sales.

Good luck on your project
