They were (a) common and (b) cute.
Since more people have more money, your scenario for Saab isn't completely out of the question.
VW had some better years/models than other years/models. With computer-assist build technology today, those (other kind of) bugs are becoming less and less common across all manufacturers' lines. Such bugs as there are are normally caught by warranty.
I, for one, would be very flattered if all-of-a-sudden, this city became like Stockholm. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
By the time Saab rolls out those two new engine technologies at zero cost to perfomance, the push will be on for 'green' cars. When you renew your membership in the Saab owners' club, you'll get a loyalty premium. One of the soundest investment moves GM could have made was picking a car to buy with a bunch of loyalists like us with world-of-mouth so strong, we place only behind Porsche in Euro-car loyalty and fourth overall if you count Toyota and Lexus as one.
