I will admit that I live in a reasonably (or UNreasonably;-) affluent
DC suburb. So there I was this morning, approaching an intersection not
far from home, when I saw a line of vehicles about 1/2 block long, in (or
trying to get into) a left turn lane waiting to get onto another road similarly clogged with traffic.
And nearly every one of them was an SUV of some sort, either white, silver
or black in color. All BIG ones, with those 4 liter V-6s or even bigger
V-8s, most of them with one passenger inside, so far as I could tell.
Waiting interminably to make that left turn, while those engines that
were 2-3 times the displacement of my 9-3's idled away. Hardly a
regular "car" among the bunch.
Is it any wonder that so much of the rest of the world thinks Americans
are nuts?
Anyway, I eased over into the thru lane, got through the intersection,
and took off down the winding country road toward the interstate,
letting the 9-3's turbo do its work. And even after I got to the office
via some stop and go traffic, my SIDS was still reading an average
fuel economy of 28.6 miles per gallon.
Isn't it amazing what cheap gas will do to a country?
