New alternator?- probably not... Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Thu, 22 Mar 2001 12:38:13 In Reply to: Do I need a new alternator?, saaber, Thu, 22 Mar 2001 01:43:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You're having charging problems, which can be caused by a number of things more likely than the alternator itself.
Is your battery good? It might have an internal short or just be worn out- any auto parts store should be able to test it for you.
If the battery is good, there may be a problem with the wiring between the battery and alternator, or the alternator might not be grounded properly. If the wiring checks out, pull the voltage regulator out of the alternator and check the brushes for wear.
Does the "electrical" warning light on your instrument panel stay lit while the engine is running? If it does, concentrate on the voltage regulator and alternator grounding/wiring. If it lights momentarily when you start your car, then goes out; check your battery. If it never lights up, fix the warning light.
Also- try posting on the classic 900 bulletin board. You'll get more feedback.
Good luck-
