Or at least, GM likes to think it can change 'em. Take a look, by way of direct comparison, at the success of the latest baby Lincoln. And check out how Cadillac has gone back to the race track along with Mercedes after a long hiatus period. This Cadillac initiative fits with Saab's endurance, hillclimb, and rally endeavors and boosts overall credibility in inangible ways. Also, some of those Caddies of today have wicked-fast top ends and acceleration. Here, I'm thinking they're after the 7-series Bimmer market. We can't judge all Caddies by that recent Opel-Caddy or the garish '59.
The premuim-end medium, and even larger cars will want a piece of a lucrative, hotly-contested high-quality market. It costs as much to put out economobiles as it does high-end autos. There's more profit in high-end autos. Remember the $7 grand Mercedes used to arbitrarily tack unto the price of an American-export Merc to make the car appear a better car, and knowing Americans would pay it?
GM's not doing anything differently than Ford or Chrysler. It's just a question of how (tastefully) and how fast.
Afterthought: Ford is said to be scrambling to take out BMW. BMW cannot possibly do stuff like chassis development for a large array of vehicles as can GM or Damlier-Chrysler. Bimmer's like a mouse in a goldfish bowl; swimming for its very life.
