First of all, if you are Russian, please take no offense to this post, I am half Russian myself so bear with me...
3 weeks ago a friend of mine drove up from California to Oregon to stay for a couple of days and get some stuff from his old house. He did NOT plan on staying for more than 3 or 4 days. So on the day before he is to head back to cali he decides to drink some vodka with our mutual friends, "the russians" as we refer to them. Unfortunatly the Russians made my friend take russian style shots...I.E. fill up a fairly tall glass and drink it down in one or two gulps. One can imagine that the three of them were quite drunk.
They decide to leave their house and head out to party. So they get into my friend's '94 Saab 900SE V6 (actually it is his mom's car) and drive to this party where I was at. It was honestly a miracle in itself that they made it there because I think the russians forgot that it was a manual and not an automatic, because of this they rolled in at about 30 or 40 mph in first gear. The car was making all sorts of very high pitched sounds that make any saab enthusist cringe.
Anyways, they end up drinking even more at this party and head home at about 3 or 4 in the morning. Also, before anyone questions why we didn't stop them from leaving, let me say that with the exception of my cali friend they looked completely sober.
So they all get home and my friend passes out, but the Russians aren't nearly ready to sleep. So they hop in the saab and drive to the local college and pull cookie's (called a doughnut in cali) in the campus soccer field as well as other green areas. This in itself was very very bad because they caused close to 2,000 dollars in damage and were caught on camera doing this. Afterwhich, they proceed to head to the local supermarket to get some food. As they approach a stop sign they see a cop heading the direction they were planning on going. The driver panicked and turned the opposite way the cop was heading. Unfortuneatly, they turned the wrong way onto a one-way street. When the driver realized this he tried to downshift and brake, however, he ending up shifting into fourth and flooring it causing them to drive over a 5 inch curb at 50-60 mph. This caused the the wheels and everything connected to them to be pushed back against the wheel wells.
To make things worse, the cop saw this happen and in about two minutes most of the local police force was on the scene. The driver was DUIed and charged with things ranging from speeding to reckless endangerment with fines approaching over 6,000 dollars.
As for the car, it has been in the shop for the last 3 weeks, leaving my friend stranded away from work on a unwarranted spring vacation. So far the entire front end has been replaced, new tranny and clutch, new custom wheels, new paneling because of all the scraps and dings. And the list goes on. The current estimate for the car is approx. 7,000 dollars and that figure is very likely to rise given the nature of the accident and how many other things could be broken. To make things worse, because this was my friend's mom's car, he is now in some extremely serious sh*t with her and might be without a home when he returns to cali.
Don't let drunk people (especially russians) drive your saab. It's really not worth it! Of course that's pretty obvious, but I'd thought I'd post this sad story and see if there was anyone who would share theirs.
