Windshield Abrasion

It appears that I scraped something hard across my windshield with the windshield wiper, and it left a visible abrasion on the glass. I thought it was just a squished insect, but when I looked more closely when I couldn't wash it off -- it appears to be a very, very shallow scrape.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might repair this? Is there such a thing as a glass polishing compound? Or?
The guy at the car wash said that I could buy some special cloths at PepBoys. I haven't checked there, but did check at another large (chain) parts store, and they had no appropriate products or suggestions.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide. If it matters, I have a 1999 9-3SE.
(Would insurance cover this if the windshield needs to be replaced?)
