Have to add my two cents to this discussion.
Yes, GM did save SAAB from oblivion. And for that I am grateful. However, does that mean that we can't criticize GM for the mistakes it makes?
Having owned SAABs since 1964, no one can say that I'm not a SAAB person. I think that my problem with the present-day GM is that it's not a car company anymore, it's a brand-marketing company. It's what happens when the top people in a car company's organization come from companies that market commodities, like canned soup and toilet paper. They aren't "car guys," and there is an excitement about cars that is present in car companies run by "car guys" that just isn't present in GM today. Look at Chrysler in the 1990s under Bob Lutz, a certified "car guy" - excitement plus! Ford, even with its SUV and recall disasters, shows more excitement towards cars than today's GM.
Yes, GM may have saved SAAB, but I have trouble seeing how today's GM management is going to appreciate and continue the "fun-to-drive" excitement that is a part of the SAAB tradition. Hopefully, I'll be proved wrong.
