I had an '89 SHO for several years... bought it as a toy and fell quite in love with it. Mine was the first gen SHO, which meant a crappy cable shifter, 15" wheels, the horrible first-gen ergonomics (*what* ergonomics?) and the, um, questionable body kit. OTOH, it also did not have ABS, airbags, leather, sunroof, had the lightest flywheel, no rev limiter, and the lowest, stiffest suspension they sold. In other words, it was ugly and simple, but nutty-fast - the fastest of all the SHOs.
By '95 they had all the problems they were gonna work out solved. That means better reliability across the board, and a little extra luxury at the cost of performance. But a fine car. Things to watch out for are brakes (ABS isn't great, and rotors are prone to warping), the transmission and clutch (both undermatched for the car), and verify timing belt services have been done - 24v very expensive valves in there. Other than that, it's a Taurus... parts are common and cheap.
Personally, I still love 'em... I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Damn fast, comfy, and at least as reliable as a 9000. Check out the link below - a great SHO mailing list with a lot of helpful participants.
