What this means is that you *must* get a rebate or you're screwed(especially since Saab is notorious for discounting).
Yes you can keep the car for it's entire life. Or you can lease it and leave the residual risk with the financing company. But if you intend to buy and hold for up to, say, 6 or 8 years, you need to be sure you get a rebate.
For instance, we bought a 1999 9-5 wagon and the end of the model year. They were having $3,000 rebates plus a $1,000 Saab loyalty. We paid $29,500 (incl auto, vent/heated seats, dest). MSRP was > $37,000. That means that the poor guy who bought a wagon a week before me for full price is now suffering an instant $4,000 hit in market value.
Unfortunately, Saab has dug themselves a whole...they artifically inflated their prices to be more in-line with other luxury brands and then used rebates as a marketing ploy (that way I can brag how I bought a 37,000 car for 30,000). But now the market is hooked and *needs* rebates. It's like a drug.
What that means for you and me is only buy when there are discounts. Like the 9-3s right now.
