because my father had a 1983 Nissan/Datsun (that was the year they did the name change) 280ZX Turbo. Sweet car. But the dealer, the manual, and everyone my dad talked to said, "let it warm up before you spool up the turbo, and let it cool off (idle) when you come home for 5 minutes". When I asked the service guy (the same one who told me the upshift idiot light couldn't be legally disabled, sigh) if I needed to idle it when I stop driving - he said not to worry about it. Just change the oil & maintain it, and it should be fine.
I think the main thing is that on most cars, the turbo is an afterthought, read "hey - this thing sucks for performance - let's throw in a turbo!" and cooling (intercooling and oil circulation) are also afterthoughts - turbo lifespan suffering as a result. Since Saab makes 9-3's _only_ with a T4, and only has a normally aspirated engine in the 9-5, they design _in_ the turbo and intercooling system to their original designs. Thus, I'd assume that they should generally last better than an aftermarket (or just as bad, afterthought) turbo or sc.
I don't know - but I can't imagine that (regardless of whether it's a base/SE/Viggen) running an engine with a wacked turbo is a good idea. I'd have to think that if the turbo is shot, you should have the engine looked at - I don't think it's like driving with a burned out taillight... :)
MHO,
Wes
