I was taking a right turn, which starts by going through a yield section that's about 20 feet long and which curves to the right. When I went to turn to look to my left for oncoming traffic, my seatbelt caught so that all I could see was the pillar. I stopped, got the seatbelt to uncatch, checked traffic, got set to go, then got hit by a van doing probably 20 miles per hour. The driver was looking left, for oncoming traffic, and not forward. I had my car for 3 days at the time of the accident, and it was damaged to the tune of about $11,000.
Also, there's many times when I stop in traffic when there is no out. You have to hope that the person driving behind you sees what's going on, or else you're history. I do take certain precautions, such as moving into a different lane if there's a tailgaiter behind me, and blowing my horn if I have to stop suddenly and have time to hit the horn. Now, at the particular location where I got hit, I also try to make sure that the person behind me sees me. For instance, I don't enter the curve of the yield section until I'm sure the person behind me sees me.
