Any real risk is very small but some people get way too personal on their family websites IMO. If you are sharing an interest with a larger community or it is business related then you might expose that part of your life in great detail but I can't see going as far as some people do when it is focused just on sharing with family and friends.
If you keep it to general family pictures and information about a vacation or something then I don't see a problem. However, I can't see plastering firstnames, lastnames and resident locations and other personal identifying details all over a family website like many people do. Since a family website generally isn't intended for a public audience anyway I would consider password protection if family members are concerned or there is any question about the nature of the content. However, it is important to understand that from a security perspective this only provides a minimal level of protection if the connection is not secure. The good news is that this will probably be overkill anyway.
The bottom line (password protected or not) is to use good judgment. Ask yourself if there is anyone who you would not want to know about the information you are considering for publication. When your blabbering about Dad Sven Petersson's cancer treatment with family and friends it might not be a big deal but what if a prospective employer hits upon the information when doing a pre-offer background search?
Use good judgement and have fun.
