Actually, the engine itself was a good engine. What suffered from reliability problems was the mechanical mechanism that decided whether the engine should fire on 8, 6 or 4 cylinders. When that mechanism went bad, lots of people just disconnected it, and the engine ran on all 8 cylinders all the time, and they had no further reliability problems with the engine itself. The problem was that the system was very complex, broke a lot, and only gave an increase in fuel economy of 1 to 2 miles per gallon. Also, the engine vibrated a lot when it was running on 6 cylinders because of balance problems.
How do I know this? My grandfather had an '81 Sedan de Ville with this engine. He bypassed the "multi-cylinder" mechanism after only 9 months of owning the car, then drove that car for 138,000 miles with no further problems from the engine.
