I was a bit disappointed to read this news article in a British publication.....
A new survey by What Car? magazine has named the most reliable used cars on sale - and they're Japanese. The survey, in conjunction with aftermarket warranty providers Warranty Direct, studied the number of warranty claims made on 22 different brands, covering over 20,000 vehicles. The average age of the cars surveyed was just over four years old, with an average 45,000 miles on their clocks.
The top brand in the survey was Mazda, with 17 claims per 100 cars - and three other brands in the top five were Japanese: Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi. However, Mercedes were second-placed, with 25 claims per 100 vehicles. Toyota scored 26 claims per 100.
At the bottom of the table was Alfa Romeo, with 64 claims per 100 vehicles; Land Rover scored 53, and Citroen 50. Some of the results were quite surprising, given the general perceptions of brand quality and reliability that many people hold - Fiat, for example, in eighth place, scored better than both BMW and Audi.
The survey also looked at the cost of repairs for these claims - which is where the European brands score better. Fiats are the cheapest to repair, with a typical cost per claim of £191; Ford was second at £222, and Vauxhall and Volkswagen follow at £236.
The rankings by number of claims for reliability are as follows:1. Mazda
2. Mercedes
3. Toyota
4. Honda
5. Mitsubishi
6. Volvo
7. Nissan
8. Fiat
9. Audi
10. Ford
11= BMW
11= Subaru
11= Peugeot
14. Hyundai
15. MG Rover
16. Volkswagen
17. Vauxhall
18= Renault
18= Saab
20. Citroen
21. Land Rover
22. Alfa Romeo
The most surprising thing about this survey, however, is the sheer numbers of claims involved; after all, Mercedes' second-place score of 25 warranty claims per 100 vehicles suggests that a quarter of all its cars had faults of some kind, however minor. Down in 20th place with 50 claims per 100, half of all Citroens seem to have had some sort of problem. And right at the bottom end of the table, that suggests that 53% of used Land Rovers and a whopping 64% of secondhand Alfa Romeos are faulty.
