Stipulation: the guy deserves to be spanked -- there's no excuse for what he did. My only beef with the whole thing relates to people who drive at freeway speed with their mutts firmly planted between themselves and the steering wheel. How safe is that? How many close calls / accidents do these people cause because they're distracted by their pets? As for his possible sentence, I think three years in the Big House is unreasonable, but three years community service at an animal shelter cleaning up puppy poop and euthanized pets may be appropriate.
RANT: Last month in San Bernardino, a young woman was sentenced to 5-years probation and community service for stabbing her newborn to death with scissors -- immediately after she delivered it in the bathtub -- because she was "depressed." As part of her community service, she now gets to "share" her wealth of experience with high school girls. Let's compare the sentence the freeway mutt killer gets with what the girl got and see where priorities lie in this society.
