I'm thinking of making my Jeep Comanche (the truck equivalent of the Cherokee) into an offroad toy and a snow mobile (the Viggen is a bit too low for any serious snow). Right now it's stock, and I've taken it offroad several times. Great fun, except for the cooling system. The cooling system in my vehicle is terrible. I need to upgrade the cooler to a triflow.
Some people have had problems with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, especially during the last change to the vehicle. However, the Cherokees seem to fare better. I have, however, had quite a few problems with mine, but mine was the first year of the 4.0L. This is the last time I buy a vehicle when it's first out on the market. Jeep has made improvements to the Cherokee every year. The engines, while based on old "push rod" technology, have great low-end grunt (i.e., torque) and tend to last a long time. I met someone the other day, and he had over 220,000 miles on his Comanche (an '89 -- mine's an '87 and only has 115,000 miles). Unfortunately, he was replacing his alternator (original) at the time.
There's quite a debate going on in the Jeep forums about solid v. independent front axles. Based solely on the pictures, I'd say that solid axles win for slow going over rough terrain. Fast moving over sand, then solid would suck.
