If you read this board on a regular basis you may have seen my posts about the '94 900S that i bought and later discovered had been in an accident. i ran a carfax report before purchase, but it did not included any data on the accident. i e-mail carfax to let them know that their report missed the info and this was their response:
Thanks for contacting Carfax by email.
Carfax currently reports on accident data using police accident reports in certain states: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin & Wyoming.
We do not use insurance information for accident data.
Also, when a vehicle is involved in a severe accident requiring an insurance company to total it (the damage is usually 70% or higher of the value), the vehicle is issued a salvage title by a state agency. Carfax receives this salvage title information directly from the state to help alert consumers about a vehicle with a potential problem.
Except for those states noted above, routine accident information is not included.
We appreciate your interest in Carfax and urge you to contact us if you have any further questions or comments regarding our service.

if you live in a state other than the ones listed above BEWARE ! CarFax is not the end all for car histories - there is NO substitute for having a qualified Saab mechanic check the car out for you. DO NOT trust a dealership to disclose info about accidents that did not total a car ! Don't get hosed like me.
