Mercedes, BMW, and VW celebrate their history! It is one of the main things that differentiate them from the Japanese brands. When you buy a Mercedes, you are buying a car from a long cherished, 100 year old company. And Mercedes advertises that fact. When you buy an Infiniti, you are buying... well, you are buying a Nissan dressed up with do-dads and thicker carpeting. No history there. Sure, it's a "smart buy", but it is still longing for some "soul".
So, in classic bumbling fashion, GM chooses to bury SAAB's soul. They've made the cars, IMHO, complicated, overstuffed versions of their generic German Opels. They've sanitized the dealerships to be "upscale" so they can attract the brain-dead status seekers who want low lease payments and a european car, but without the sticker prices of the Mercedes/BMW. They are pushing the brand name to the silly yuppies who wouldn't buy an Infiniti, but can't afford the Mercedes or BMW. They'd like to get rid of the "quirky" or "unique" image, and become mainstream. This might push up sales. But it will kill the SAAB core values of utility, performance, safety, and efficiency.
