I agree with you RS, and with JMC.
IMHO, It's unfortunate that while the new cars are good, it would be true to say that they're not AS good as they used to be, in terms of the level of difference from the competition. Being totally honest, if you compare what a 900 SPG/Aero/16S was in 1989 with other cars on the market, there was significant difference and significant innovation with rock solid construction. They'll certainly never make 'em like that again. The situation now is that there isn't the same significant structural or styling differentiation any longer and in certain respects the technology is lagging behind as opposed to leading. Ask me why I bought a wibbly, sluggish 9-3 Convertible with a 4 speed auto when for the same money I could've had 5 speed auto and a lot more horsepower..? Dunno, nostalgia perhaps?
Sure technology, business etc etc moves on, but BMW, Mercedes and a few others are selling individualistic quality cars. Makes me a bit sad that Saab individualism is now more a marketing strategy than a solid reality.
