is more for towing (although I personally have never seen anyone use it to tow anything) or snow than offroading. It doesn't have a low range, and its awd system really isn't up to the rigors of offroading. Plus, it doesn't have any ground clearance. Additionally, it's very small. The 5-series station wagon is cheaper, better handling, and has more interior space (see http://www.edmunds.com). The X5 is smaller inside than a Jeep Grand Cherokee (which, by the way, would crush the X5 in any type of offroading). Also, one of the TV shows did a review of the X5 with the sport suspension, and they were bouncing around on nice Southern California roads. There's no way you could take that offroad. You'd snap your neck.
