Back before GM owned half of SAAB, SAABs were well liked, quirky vehicles that extolled the Swedish design concepts of ergonomics, utility, and safety. They were fun to drive and definitely unique. The 900 Turbo regularly was in the "Top Ten" cars list at Motor Trend, and many automotive columnists drove Saabs everyday.
Once GM took over, they had the Saab designers abandon their new 900 design and base it on an Opel. The result was a big yawn. The 900 fell off the "Top Ten" lists. Consumer Reports reported "there are better alternatives" and listed the NG900 as a "used car to avoid". In "Sedan Comparison" tests, the NG900 and 9-3 placed dead last all the time. The NG900 and 9-3's safety ratings fell. SAAB became a company that has to provide heavily discounted leases to move product, a product that has lost its uniqueness and has taken a "performance" and "glitz" approach.
Thankfully, the 9-5 came along and breathed some life back into the company. Perhaps the newer 9-5 with its improvements and the next 9-3 will improve things even more. I've driven SAABs since 1979, and would really like a well engineered, well balanced, comfortable, and reliable SAAB. But for now, I'll hold onto my well engineered, well balanced, comfortable and reliable 1991 900 and wait.
