Well, actually, if you want to get picky (whatever happened to Mr. Picky, a former regular contributor to this BB?), 95s and 96s had steering column-mounted ignitions only from 1964 on, I believe. Before that, I'm pretty certain the ignition switch was mounted on the dashboard.
The ignition switch was moved to the steering column in 1964 as part of a dashboard redesign, and to provide a new anti-theft measure, the locking gear shift column (remember that in 95 and 96 models, the gear shift lever was on the steering column). You would put the car in reverse, then when you took the key out, a device connected to the ignition switch would lock the gear shift in reverse so if someone "hot-wired" the car to steal it, he still couldn't get the shifter out of reverse. This gear shift lock idea was continued into the 99 and 900 models, instead of the steering column lock used in most other cars. However, the 9000 always used the more conventional steering column lock.
I'm not sure where the ignition was on the model 97 (Sonett) in the late '60s/early '70s, but I'm sure it wasn't between the seats.
The between-the-seats location for the SAAB ignition switch started in 1969 with the SAAB 99 model, and continued with the model 900. The 9000 model (1986 - 1998) never had the ignition mounted between the seats, as pointed out by James Uhl in his post.
