Hi Rick,

We have a house in Orleans, so I've never rented, but I can tell you a bit about the area.

Orleans has some rentals, but it is largely a residential town. It's much quieter than many of the surrounding towns. If you're looking for a relaxing vacation, Orleans is a good choice.

There are two primary beaches. Skaket Beach is on the bay side, and it's calmer and warmer. Nauset Beach is part of the National Seashore on the ocean side, and it is beautiful. If you buy an Oversand Permit, you can drive out to your own private piece of beach. Otherwise, Nauset can get pretty crowded by parking lot.

There's good fishing from Nauset Beach, and in many of the kettle ponds inland. If you want deep-sea, there are charters that run out of Rock Harbor on the bay side.

Orleans is a cute town, with nice shops and a few great restaurants. Our absolute favorite restaurant on the Cape is Painters up in Wellfleet though. Just call ahead for reservations.

We're big baseball fans, so we spend many nights at the ball field in the middle of town watching the Orleans Cardinals. Some of the top college prospects come to the Cape every summer (capecodbaseball.org). We used to watch Nomar Garciaparra play for Orleans. If you want to say hello, I'll be on the first base line smoking a cigar (I tell my wife that it keeps the mosquitos away;-) If you start to follow the team, you can always check out the other local towns by having dinner there before the away games.

I always see rentals listed in the Cape Cod Times (capecodtimes.com), and in the Boston Globe (boston.com/globe/). Good luck, and enjoy.

-Kirk
