As I've said a number of times on this board, we have a 9-3 and an A-4. The A-4 is a chipped '97 quattro 5 speed. It's got approx. 105,000 miles on it and it has been very reliable. We think it's a great car (my wife is the primary driver).
As others have noted, if you get an A-4, be sure that the timing belt is changed at the appropriate intervals. Our mechanic forgot to advise us to change it at 90,000 miles and it broke at 94,000. Fortunately, he willingly paid for all of the resultant damage to the engine. I don't consider the breakage of the belt to be unusual considering the mileage and the fact that the car is chipped.
If there's one car that I would have instead of a Saab, it would be an Audi.
