On December 23rd I was caught speeding. I was in cruise at 129km/h in a 110km/h zone. The cop said he had a low reading of 124km/h and a high reading of 125km/h. The ticket had me pegged at 125km/h.
I drive a '96 900ST. It has 205-50R16 tires stock, but when I was caught I was running new 195-60R15 winter tires. According to the tire size calculator, my speedo should have been 0.6% too slow. In reality, it was reading 3.2% too fast. That would seem to indicate that my speedo is really always showing me speeds that are 3.8% too fast (at least at 125km/h).
I have heard that it is normal for speedometers to high ball your speed. It's a factory liability thing and ensures that you are not speeding inadvertantly. I would assume that you were going somewhere in the range of 110-115mph. Not too shabby. The fastest I've ever taken my car so far is 180km/h (112mph). That was in 4th gear with lots of power too go faster. Gotta love Saabs. I couldn't believe how fast it got me to that speed. The last car I tried that in was a '95 Dodge Neon. It took forever to climb between 150 and 180. Now that I have a speeding ticket I have to be good for a couple years. Another speeding ticket at that high of a speed would cause my license to be revoked for 6 months.
