I am under the impression that it is a one year program in the US for a Master's degree in Engineering. In Canada it's two years, so a fairly significant commitment. My opinion is that you should only do the degree if a) you believe you will work well with the prof, and b) you are interested in the project. Ask the prof's current grad students what they think of him. Trust me on this, I spent two very unenjoyable years because I ignored my instincts regarding the prof.
On the other hand, my starting salary upon graduation was ~10k higher than it otherwise would have been, and I made some good contacts.
