I graduated HS last year and I saw the same things. You could easily tell whose parents bought the car and who bought thier own. The kids (usually girls, oddly enough) who had thier parents buying them cars, could usually be distinguished not only by new cars, but by the numerous dings and dents in them. It seems that when you are given a car you dont treat it as well.
The exception was the kid with the new 2001 S4, but then again, he bought it himself. Yes himself. But he also was a big time dealer (drugs, that is), so thats to be expected. One upside though, he didn't do the stereotypical "pimpin" mods to the car...tinted windows, azian wheelz, ect. He kept the car night and tight, like it should be.
As for me, I was the kid with the crappy 86 Accord till I got my 900 and now Sonett. All of which I have paid for my self. I think there is much more satisfaction in working for your car when youare in HS, rather than having one given to me. But, if my parents had offered me a Viggen, screw the satisfaction and give me the Viggen!
Seriously people, although you might feel a little jelous, would you refuse a Viggen or be upset if someone offered to buy you any car? I dont think so. But still, I get mad when I hear about people getting free cars.
