My wife's old corolla got some expensive work: starter, alternator, etc. Each and every time I feel they ripped her off.

The worst was my sister in Denver.

1994 or 1996 (I forget) Camry V6. I do work in Toyota plants and she bought one on my recommendation. She's loved the car for a few years, no problems. It's time for what we call a "major service", so she took it to the dealer. They said they did oil, filters, steering fluid, coolant, lube, inspections, etc. The service cost her about $600.

Then they told her the timing belt would need work soon (they were right, according to the service interval), she'd need a new steering rack and a whole bunch of other parts. Parts total: $1300. Labor Total ??? This is on a car that ran beautifully when it came in for a routine (overpriced) service.

So she took it to an indy that another family member uses... The guy did an inspection and said they put oil in for steering fluid. So toyota wanted to get paid to fix their mistake!!!

At the end the indy flushed the steering system 3 times, fixed the other problems, and had her on her way. Wasn't cheap, but it was fixed right.

I question that if Toyota screwed up that badly on the steering system, what did they do to the rest? Did they actually flush the coolant? What did $600 get? My sister will never go back to that dealer!

She actually wanted me to recommend she get a saab. I told her that if she loves the camry, and it's not causing problems, stick with it. It's a good reliable car, and it'll run for years to come. I have a bit more tolerance and do a bit of the work on the saabs myself, so I get a little less frustrated if the car acts up.
