I'm not going to defend the ridiculous cost of things, but let me tell you the non-car related experience I have with lights like that. I work in a biology lab that uses high-output mercury arc lamps in the microscopes. We have both 100W and 50W lamps. The lamps are made of a quartz envelope with a cathode and an anode with high pressure mercury gas. The bulb alone is about $200 if I remember correctly. That doesn't include the cost of the focusing, or housing apparatus. The HID lamps in cars need to have specially made housings to keep people from injury if a lamp were to explode - or to keep the lamp from exploding in the first place. Also, you need a fairly sophisticated way to focus the beam - that costs money to make the lenses and reflectors. The stuff we use for our microscopes costs about $5,000 for a complete lamp housing with power supply and bulb! That's for 1. I wouldn't complain too much about spending $900. The HID option on cars isn't cheap - you have to make a conscious effort to get them. I'm not trying to say "serves him right" but it happens. Just goes along with my original thoughts - more toys = more stuff that can and will break. I feel bad for your friend because those lights should last a good long time - but I don't feel bad about how much it costs because if you're shelling out almost $40K for a car, and tacking on that $1000 option for the lights, you aren't really in a position to bitch too much about the cost. Just my $.02
