As a former owner of a 1988 190E 2.3, I can say that it was very reliable, got great gas mileage, approximately 31 mpg on the freeway, and was a "solid" feeling car. The only thing I would "complain" about would be the 0-60 time which was approximately 9.9 seconds with an automatic. As another poster said, the MB Tex interior is very durable, looks and feels almost like leather, but is actually vinyl. I would recommend a 190E with the 2.6 liter inline 6 for the additional power and smoothness at idle when compared to the 4 cylinder engine. Horsepower for the 4 cylinder is 130 vs. 158 for the 6 cylinder engine. 0-60 times drops to 8.7 seconds with the 6 cylinder. Rear seating is somewhat tight. Interior space is similar to a Saturn SL sedan. Trunk space is similar as well at 12 cubic ft. The car handles very well and has a quiet smooth ride, very similar to the larger Mercedes sedans. In regards to the reliability of the 190E-16 valve, the Cogsworth engine has had durability issues according to my Mercedes mechanic. Other than that, I haven't heard of any other negative press for the 190 line of cars. Hope this helps.
