My dealer did the cheap fixes too. First he replaced the knobs and "lubed" the cables. Then he replaced the cables. No good!
Last year he replaced the entire heater-box with a new design. It really worked. Much smoother operation now. I can't believe the difference. The work was done under warranty so I don't know the cost.
Even if you are out of warranty, try the get a free fix from your dealer. The problem is wide spread.
