OT: any Europeans here? questions about heath care

I have a friend going through some hell with their insurance company. My sister and I have also had difficulties with our insurance companies, especially her when she turned 23 and her coverage under my fathers plan ran out and she had to switch and there is some overlap time or something that got screwed up.
Anyway, I was thinking this would be a good place to find some Europeans or even Swedes (who supposedly have an excellent national health care system) and if you could tell me just how well covered everyone is. I mean, if I want to go and get some tests done, I have to find out if my insurance company will cover it first, and sometimes just the fact that I have to get permission to see a doctor stresses me out. Just the possibility that they can turn me down, it just freaks me out. I'm going to raise a family one day and, you know, it scares me that my well-being could be in the hands of an HMO.
I'm wondering if the nationalized health care systems in a lot of European countries (in your personal experiences) provide you with less stressful dealings when it comes to getting the health care you need. Just looking for personal experiences and opinions, I *don't* want to start a political debate or anything like that. The U.S. and Europe just have different styles of doing things, and I respect both viewpoints of who should pay for healthcare. Im just considering adding health care to my list of reasons to possibly spend some time in Europe after I get out of school, and maybe accidently get stuck there and not come back :)
Many thanks,
Rob
