To get good MPG figures one can simply
use a gearing that gets better MPG but that
will reduce the performance of the car
going uphill. The other part is ECU
software that matches the EPA tests
and does well in them.
All the car companies do that, some more and some less.
What I say is that when you drive a car quickly
under non EPA conditions, heavier cars fitted with
large CID engines will burn more fuel in relation
to their weight, then lighter cars, for a simple
reason... the amount of energy needed to accelerate
a car is in direct relationtial to its weight. You need
2x the energy to accelerate 2x mass at the same rate.
So... back to the problem... lots of weight + large CID engine
= more fuel burn under non cruise conditions.
Cause these cars need to use more power to simply
keep up with traffic as they need to accelerate more mass.
As a result they will burn more GAS for each LBS of their
weight under acceleration then a lighter car, thus the need
to use much more efficient engines on them.
So when I say that a X5 4.6i burns 2x the fuel but
its not 2x as heavy then a 9-5 Aero... this is so
by definition (more mass and more drag) unless the 4.6i
used some form of advanced efficient Turbo engine which
it does not have... Fact is that goog Turbo engines are supperior at
cranking out more HP out of less GAS or Diesel.
e=m.v2 so by definition you need lots more energy to accelerate heavier stuff.

Coolknight
