Vandals: Opinions wanted

I want to ask around here for some opinions on my dilema.
At my house, my driveway is only big enough for 2 cars. I own 3. I really don't want to park the car on my yard because it ruins the grass underneath the car. But, it is plenty big enough for the car.
So, I park my 3rd car on a side street next to my lawn. My house is about 50 yards away from the car (It's a big yard!). This is perfectly legal, and there is only community traffic on the road.
Now, In the last 3 months, the car has been egged 3 times. Usually, it is just 2 eggs, and simple green cleans it up fast. No big deal, because the car is just a beater anyway!
This past time, it was egged and newspaper was thrown next to the car. The paper was also shredded up and spread over my lawn. The paper was some apartment ads, so it could have come from the small convienence store down the road.
I can't figure out if a neighbor is pissed off because I park my car on the side of the road or if it's just an easy oppurtunity to some punk kids.
I'm worried if I leave the car there, they will start to do worse things.
Is there anyway to narrow down if it's a neighbor or if it's kids?
I thought egging cars was an 80's thing?
I cleaned the car before taking a photo of it, so I couldn't call the cops, but I will start next time.
The only thing I can think of is either just giving up and moving the car to my lawn, or going on a stakeout.
