They work great, but it is important to determine what kind of fuzz is all over it. A very fine grained, mud-like mound is normal. If there are any sharp or flakey bits in there, you have a problem. Always wipe off the stuff with a finger, and rub the finger and thumb together to see what kind of metal you have. And thoroughly clean the plug before reinstalling - spray contact cleaner works pretty well.
Turbine aircraft have used magnetic "chip detectors" for many years in engines and gearboxes, mainly because they use full synthetic lubes that have long change intervals. They have a mode that allows you to burn off the really fine stuff if you get a red warning light. If the light stays on afterwards, meaning big particles, you have to set the plane down pronto to investigate.
