I love my Blaupunkt San Jose MP41. It has it's quirks (ha!), but the only major technical flaw already has a solution, just waiting for me to stop being lazy and send it in for a new decoder chip. Other than that, I think ergonomically and functionally it's one of the best. Beyond that, I'd look at JVC's and Alpine.
My biggest thoughts at this point are, car MP3 players are not yet to a point where you can simply expect a particular feature from all of them. There are still several features that many users consider 'must have' items on their head unit, which are not present in entire lines of players.
Here are just a few examples:
Kenwood - Will not do random across disc, only in a folder. Gee, you wanted to put all your 150 songs in the same folder, right, just so you can get random across them all?
Pioneer (reports vary) - Has as much as a 4 second delay between tracks, either playing straight through or skipping.
JVC - No pause.
Sony - Defining garish in a sea of weird looking choices.
Alpine - Perhaps the only drawbacks are the prices.
Panasonic - Will not support ID3 tags. ????
Anyhoo, like I said, those are just a few examples. It really pays to be an educated consumer if you want to be really happy with your purchase. I agree with the comments that most aftermarket stereos don't look good in a Saab dash, which was why I was saddened to take out my Blaupunkt Toronto. It actually looked BETTER in the dash than the stock head unit. I will keep checking into hard drive based MP3 players for the future, but for now the in dash Blau is very nice and it works.
What I'd really like is for somebody to come out with a DVD player that plays MP3s off recordable DVD's. Sure...it's not any cheaper than blank CD's, in fact it's more expensive, but 9+ GB on one removeable disc, sweet!! Of course that means I'd end up with two DVD players in my dash, as I am not getting rid of my current Clarion! Damn you technology, stay the same for once!! :) I'd be a lot less poor.
