It sounds like your wife will be near Chinatown (Tufts Med?)... if you don't currently have children - I'd opt for the intown route and enjoy the incredible opportunities that Boston provides. The new affordable community is Jamaica Plain (very culturally diverse, greatest percentage of open space in the city - Arnold Arboretum/Franklin park, lots of super restaurants, minutes from downtown). You can get affordable rentals of a house (with off-street parking!). Your commute will be a breeze as you will be going counterflow and your wife will have a 15 minute t-ride... and you can pick her up on your way back in-town and enjoy awesome Asian cuisine. I lived for 12 years in Boston, but I am now a semi-old fart (43) and live on Cape Cod (grew up there and love the northside, kyaking, mountain-biking, trail running, birding) - but I teach in Boston so I stay in-town three nights/week). JP has many of those attributes that I find on the Cape, but it is not so politically conservative.
Happy hunting...
Eric
