TCAS (Traffic Collision Advoidance System) is getting to be and off the shelf item. Uses mode 3 A/C from other aircraft to either alert to position and altitude and heading(calculated) of other aircraft. The simplest ones mearly alert to a potential conflict, The top end decide what to do and can even be hooked to George (your friendly auto pilot). That's why even VFR aircraft operating in controlled airspace are now, at a minimum, required to have a blind encoder. Always transmits 1200 (VFR) and the altitude. Like all bells and whistles though, doesn't do you a bit of good if you run into someone who has their transponder off. Can be make it real easy to be complactent.
