While I agree with you conceptually speaking about torque being more important than hp, one must realize that they are one in the same. Knowing one curve tells you the other curve. They're dependent functions.
The torque curve does not at all look typical Saab to me. Saab turbo hp curves have been typified by a flat peak usually across about a 2500 rpm range. This one looks more typical, like a BMW inline-6 for example, with a more peaking curve. However, that said, it's still a pretty broad banded curve thanks to the turbo, and it has good torque across a wide range. In fact, as I pointed out, integrating over the rev range gives more output in my theoretical 2.0T curve than in the old 9-3 engine. A peaky curve isn't always worse than a flat curve...it just has to peak significantly higher than the peak of the flat curve in order to make up for the shape.
Re: Performance Saab... I've had good experiences with them to date. Will go in for my first service on the 9-3 sometime early December. Hope to take the 9-3SS for a spin then!
Cheers,
'Roo
