SAAB to be more tightly integrated into GM

For those of us who thought that SAAB might be allowed to continue to develope its own engines and transmissions, the following quote from the Daily New section of The Car Connection does not bode well:
"Dave Andrea, an analyst with the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich., said part of the problem is the disconnect between Saab’s management and GM’s goals. Up until last year, GM had only owned a 50-percent stake in the Swedish automaker and tended to treat it as one of a larger portfolio of brands. Now GM has gained tighter control of the company, as it exercised its option to acquire the rest of the Swedish automaker last year, Andrea said. He expects GM to integrate Saab’s operations into GM of Europe and exercise tighter control over product development in the future. “You’re going from operational control to full integration,” said Andrea.
"The emphasis will be on rationalization in the future, he added. In the future, Saab’s engines and transmissions will be developed largely by GM, he added. The question of Saab’s image and market position also will now be decided by GM, which has now lent several executives to the Swedish carmaker to fill positions both in Europe and in North America."
