Thanks for the info. I too employ your "free friction" strategy as much as possible (much to the annoyance of my passengers "why are you slowing down so gradually?!"), and only use the brakes when necessary, usually at the end of a stop. I do the same for the clutch, for example in stop and go traffic...I'll usually only "go" for one out of every 3 or so "go" cycles of the car ahead of me, just allowing the gap to grow until I'm confident I can engage first and roll as slowly as possible without stalling the engine. That way I don't have to apply the brakes as much, nor cycle the clutch engagement as much.
The question I've always had about brakes is when you do have to brake, is it better (in terms of wear) to brake gently for a longer time, or to brake hard for a shorter time. You seem to be saying brake gently for a long period of time. The manual recommends the opposite...hmm... but you do have evidence to back up your strategy :-)
There must be a way to do this problem analytically. Determine the rate of material loss on the pads as a function of rotational speed of the disc and the clamping force between pad/disc. Then correlate clamping force to time necessary to stop from a given speed. I'm sure it's been done before.
