Do you say Bee-Emm-DoubleU or do you say "bummwuh," Of course, you say what one is supposed to say, three letters in succession (B-M-W). However, for Saab, we say the word: "sob," as opposed to Ess-Ay-Ay-Bee (S-A-A-B).
It's like this... Saab : Scuba :: BMW : NBC ---and--- Saab : Scuba :: Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget : self-containted underwater breathing apparatus. The correct capitalization is "Saab," because we have turned selected letters of a series of words into a proper noun that is easy to say... whereas BMW has not been turned into a word, it is three letters in succession, so we pronounce and capitalize each letter.
To write SAAB is to say Ess-Ay-Ay-Bee, just as to write BMW is to say Bee-Emm-DoubleU. So, we say "sob" and therefore write "Saab."
-Adrian; I drive a Saab. What's a SAAB?
PS: It doesn't really matter, because regardless, we should echo the proprietary company's use of the word even if we dispute its correctness. If Saab writes Saab, we write Saab. If Saab writes SAAB, we write SAAB. But, as you said, Saab uses Saab. So no praab, baab!
