I'm also in the SE Michigan area. Could've used your TB's wagon yesterday to load a 29"X26"X23" box into my 9-5 Sedan. Had to go fetch my wife's conversion van to get it home. As much as I like my 9-5, I still think there's no better way to travel by road with 3 small kids and a dog than in a TV/VCR equipped van. I tend to get a little sciatica on long road trips in a car because in a car, you're practically sitting on the floor. That doesn't happen when I'm sitting more erect in one of the captains chairs of the van.
I've got a roof-top cargo box for storage too. Again, works out great on long trips. We've never loaded our to a point where it started to feel squirrely -and the van's sprung pretty soft to begin with. But we also drive a lot more defensively in it. It's a big vehicle, so you don't do a lot of quick maneuvering.
