Ignition Cassette flambé. How often does this happen?

My 9-3 SE (01 - still thankfully under warranty) had some problems the other day. It's only got 30,000 miles on it - and was ironically just in for the 30K service last week.
While out running some errands, the car had been running fine. Run into the store and grab what I need, come out, and the car just cranks and cranks... I thought I had errantly hit the accelerator and errantly flooded the engine (carbureted flashback). So I let it sit for 10 minutes and tried again. Cranked, almost as a car would if the timing chain had broken. Kept trying one last time. Then I smelled something. I opened the hood, and much to my dismay, there was both white smoke (electrical fire anyone?) with a very defined electrical fire smell.
Had my wife call the dealer and they called me at the store (I need to get a cell phone :-)). Dealer knew almost immediately what it was - and took only a bit of time on Monday (it happened on Saturday and got towed in) to fix - almost as if this is something they're very used to.
So how often does this $426 part elect to flambé itself? Is this out of the ordinary? I've not seen a ton of mention of this component on the board... Didn't torque me too much, since it was under warranty - but must admit it frazzled me a little seeing my car smoking - I've seen some serious car fires from misinstalled block heaters when I lived in Alaska - my impulse was to run the hell away from my car...
