Dan,

You bring up some good points. I hope Arthur Andersen isn't doing the accounting! I don't have any proof that the postage price and Amtrak are connected, it's more of a theory. I do know that Amtrak hauls mail across the country and if they take out gov't loans the passengers get to foot the bill. Now the passengers could be people or they could be letters. All I know for sure is that whether Amtrak has no riders or is packed to the top, there will be mail cars in tow.

As for the glory days, yes they are gone. I think that where Amtrak is doomed is in the fact that people can't economically take the train short distances. By economically I'm considering cost and time frame.

Amtrak is unable to serve the greater population because overall they do not run on their own rails. They are reliant upon other freight railroads for trackage rights. Therefore they can only go where the rails go and unfortunately a large portion of rails have been torn out for bike paths or just plain abandoned. It's kind of sad considering it costs less to maintain rail than it does to put down new rail.

I have often rode the Metra trains in the greater Chicago area and enjoy the benefits of being able to hop on the train and get off twenty minutes later, saving myself an hours drive. Actually saving 30 min drive and 30 min stuck in traffic.

The Northeast Corridor is a very profitable Amtrak area. It's too bad the rest of the countries rail network is unable to provide.

I could ramble forever on this subject.

Arik
