The clown who writes about cars for the BG is a dickhead. He doesn't know jack shit about cars, IMHO, and I really don't know how he keeps his job. He's often wrong on points of fact, so I wouldn't take what he writes as being factually correct. His praise of the new 9-3 is merited, though. I would suspect that in it's worst year, the previous 9-3 sold 1/3 what the Classic 900 sold in it's best year... at a time when the 900 was possibly the only SAAB model sold in North America. Yep: he's using sales figures for the 900 from 1986 (when the 9000 was just coming on stream, and things were at their best for the C900) with sales figures from 2002 when the old 9-3 was at it's nadir, and reaching the end of it's production life. Not the greatest of comparisons. If he actually CARES about SAAB, as opposed to just WORRYING about SAAB, he may focus more on the positive attributes of the NG 9-3 and less on the slow sales of the last couple of years. I almost wonder if he's hoping SAAB fails totally, so he can write an epitaph in a couple of years, saying how great SAABs once were, and how he in his infinite wisdom saw the end coming for a long time. After all, he does know all about cars, and he writes drivel about them for the underinformed yuppies/dinkys, etc. in Boston's affluent suburbs. We have had numerous discussions about Automotive writers in the general press. Unfortunately, they are really there to just fill in space and provide a little light entertainment between the upcoming war or the stagnant stock market. I don't know why he hates the 9000 so much: I have certainly never dreaded anything about mine.
