Hi,
What you should worry about is the spread. If the spread between
low number and high number is wide, it's a sure sign that the oil has
a lot of miscosity modifiers.
Viscosity modifiers are large polymers which do not maintain their
level of viscosity very well under stress. Also, viscosity modifiers'
molecular structures break down over time.
Having said that, even though Mobil 1 0w-40 and 15w-50 have wide
spreads between high and low numbers (identically wide since 0w is really
5w down to non-arctic temperatures), both are PAO synthetics and therefore
do not need heavy amounts of viscosity modifiers.
thanks
Jae
