The wire disconnecting makes sense. OnStar needs electric power as well as its antenna. The airbags are powered by their own power supply capacitors or something like that.
A friend at work has a pretty new GM truck with OnStar. He hit a deer, and heard the speaker "OnStar emergency..." or whatever they said. Well, his battery was shattered, so as soon as he turned off the engine, he had no more electric power. So the OnStar people couldn't get him to answer...
In his case, they called the sheriff about it, they showed up in a few minutes & said they were notified by OnStar. But its pretty easy to imagine a case where the OnStar module loses electric power before it has a chance to send the airbag message.
Its a collision, after all. There's always going to be the chance that the OnStar hardware gets busted up...
